AccTech Systems Bartho Eksteen Wine Evening

With good connections, and very short notice, we got winemaker Bartho Eksteen, member of the

prestigious Cape Winemakers Guild (CWG), to do our Spring 2019 wine evening at De Kloof

Restaurant, Waterkloof, Pretoria.

From his schooldays at Boland Landbouskool, wine was in Bartho’s blood and DNA.  “I came across an advert for a winemaker in in the careers’ section of The Rapport, and I thought ‘I can do this’.  So after he finished his studies it was off to co-op, Rooiberg. His job was to classify the grapes into quality categories.

He followed this with consultant winemaking gigs at Sumaridge and Raka, before founding Hermanuspietersfontein—the country’s first urban winery—where he was both winemaker and director.

His excellence there saw him winning the Diners Club Winemaker of the Year in 2010, which led to the realisation of a lifelong dream of both his and Suné’s. With the help of some funding from Diners Club, they took the opportunity to realise their vision of a wine academy or Wijnskool.

In 2014 he hung up his hat at HPF and poured his considerable energy back into his own brand of wines, Wijnskool by Bartho Eksteen.

His wines and the academy have kept him busy ever since.

The wine will be paired with food from De Kloof, one of the TOP restaurants in Pretoria. 

The Spring menu:

Snoek ceviche in wonton, Basil mousse & carrot chutney on Bruschetta, salami and grana Padano 

@ 2016 DOM MCC (Pinot Noir/Chardonnay/Pinot Meunier)

Pampoenkop” Pumpkin, raspberry and butternut soup, Profiterole, Ginger jelly, Pumpkin seeds, Cream cheese,  Halva and Parma ham @ 2019 BLOM Rosé.

Fransiena”  Rosewater confit pork belly, guanciale, dark chocolate cracker, pear puree, nutmeg froth, sweet potato, sauerkraut  @ 2016 MEESTER Sauvignon Blanc.

“Weiveld en bosveld”  Seared Beef Picanha, oxtail jus. Bacon wrapped Kudu bomb. Wood ear mushroom risotto, pea powder, braised fennel and carrot @ 2016 OUSKOOL Rhône-style.

“Tarte tatin” Pineapple tarte tatin, salted caramel sauce, pine nuts, mascarpone ice-cream @ 2019 SOETMUIS Sauvignon Blanc Noble Late Harvest.

De Kloof represent a movement against the usual culinary mediocrity and compromise.
